Welcome, y'all!

When most people search for music about HIV/AIDS, search engines point them back to the 1990s. They find Hollywood tributes, stadium charity anthems, and polished pop ballads. Those songs served a purpose in their time, but they only tell a fraction of the story. 

They don't sing about the smell of bleach and fear in the early 1980s AIDS wards. They don't sing about being designated as part of "The 4-H Club" when medicine was still guessing. They don’t sing about Gay Cancer, ARC, and GRID. They don't sing about institutional cover-ups, government surveillance, or what it actually feels like to watch four decades of history unfold before your very eyes. 

I’m Bob Bowers—also known as One Tough Pirate—and as a 43-year long-term HIV/AIDS survivor, I am using modern music to chronicle the raw, unvarnished history of this epidemic from 1983 to right damn now. I’m doing my very best to honor the countless friends I’ve lost as well.

December 1st rolls around once a year. The cameras arrive, the red ribbons are pinned, and the corporate PR machine takes its annual victory lap about daily pills and modern breakthroughs. But what happens when the clock strikes midnight on December 2nd?

You don’t fight a forty-five-year war just to be remembered twenty-four hours a year.

Over 44 million courageous souls have been lost since the epidemic began. More than 41 million brothers and sisters are walking the line today. This new song for World AIDS Day 2026 is an uncompromising, cinematic tribute to the fallen, an indictment of the sanitized PR spectacle, and an anthem for the frontline veterans who survived the darkest years of silence, isolation, and medical experimentation.

Written and produced by long-term survivor Bob Bowers as part of the official audio archive for The True Tale of One Tough Pirate and The Gospel According to One Tough Pirate, this song fuses heartland rock, driving guitars, harmonica stabs, and gravelly spoken word. From turning his motorcycle around in front of Sunset Strip Tattoo in the 1990s to getting the red ribbon etched onto his stomach for the 25th anniversary of AIDS, every line represents a year of survival, education, advocacy, and defiance.

The HIV/AIDS awareness song, FORTY THREE YEARS, drops straight into the summer of 1983 in Los Angeles, riding a 90s boom-bap pulse, dusty vinyl crackle, and warm jazz keys. It captures the sudden collision between youth in the big city heat and the harsh reality of an unknown epidemic, HIV/AIDS.

From the dark early days with no tests and no playbook to turning four decades of crippling side effects and pain into purpose, this track is a raw testimony of faith and endurance. Forty-three years of survival is no small deal—it is living proof that you can face death and choose to keep standing tall.
